Eastern Mediterranean University Engineering Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın represented EMU at the 7th European Convention of Engineering Deans (ECED), which took place in the Universitat Politècnica de València in the School of Design Engineering (ETSID), Spain.

The objective of this convention is to provide a framework for leaders and stakeholders in engineering programs, and research institutions in Europe to share experiences and discuss key issues aimed at improving the strategies, policy and performance of Engineering Higher Education institutions.

A major strength of this annual international meeting, jointly organized by CESAER (the Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research) and SEFI (the European Society for Engineering Education), is that its outputs, results and conclusions are fed into the network of participating institutions, which contributes both to the individual growth of universities and to the enhancement of EU policy regarding engineering education and research.

Having taken place under the theme of “Engineering in a Global Context”, ECED 2015 Convention hosted general and specific working groups as well as European deans and administrators who have access to information networks.

ECED 2015 also hosted topics on  “Engineering Management in a Global Context”, “Learning and Teaching in a Global Context” and “PhD Education and Research in a Global Context”.

Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın stated that Eastern Mediterranean University Engineering Faculty, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Industrial Engineering Programs possess ABET accreditation. During the upcoming year, the accreditation process will be renewed from a total of 8 programs with the addition of 3 new programs, namely Information Systems, Mechatronic and Software Engineering Programs. The faculty’s participation in ECED 2015 and other similar international meetings overlaps with Eastern Mediterranean University’s vision on internalisation and quality. Prof. Dr. Hocanın also put forth that whilst the issues of academic management, undergraduate education and other relevant topics discussed in the convention show similarities with EMU at a large extent, he observed that there is a huge gap between our university and European Universities regarding postgraduate education and research. In Europe, postgraduate studies and research are structured in line with the demands of the industry. Outcomes of research conducted consist of scientific publications as well as production and other copyright or patent related issues.
