The said rankings were organized according to the social and economic impact of universities from across the world based on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals such as Gender Equality, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action, Partnership for the Goals and primarily Good Health and Wellbeing, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions and Quality Education. The UN Sustainable Development Goals are a blueprint to eradicate poverty, protect our planet and ensure the peace and the well-being of all people. THE compiled a ranking based on these goals for the first time in order to encourage universities from across the globe to contribute to a better world

EMU was the only university from North Cyprus to appear on the rankings that featured 19 universities from Turkey and 2 from South Cyprus. EMU featured in the 101-200 band of the Sustainable Development Goal of Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. The work EMU carried out in the field of health in recent years was influential in its high position on the list. In a statement EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam indicated that collaborations with Oxford University in the field of women’s health and with the TRNC Ministry of Health, University College of London and the Committee on Missing Persons on cancer research played an important role in their high ranking in the field of health.
